How often do we give thanks for a hot shower or a clean glass of water? Do our minds go to the inventors of these technologies? Our thanks should certainly go to them, but they should also go to the brave men that made those inventions possible.
Memorial Day is celebrated to remember those courageous men who fought and died for our freedom. Though the Civil War is a distant memory for our country, the people that defended our rights and liberties should never be forgotten!
Without the sacrifice the soldiers made, we would not have the basic comforts we utilize today. A hot shower or a clean drink of water would not be possible. Memorial Day is a great time to say thank you for all of the things we have today!
Decoration Day was the Start
Prior to 1971, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. It was considered a national holiday, but not a Federally recognized one. Decoration Day dates as far back as the Civil War; when the graves and memorials of the fallen soldiers would be decorated with flowers, ribbons, and flags.
It was also on Decoration Day that the Gettysburg Address is commonly recited. Written by President Abraham Lincoln to commiserate the memorial at the gettysburg cemetery, the speech has been long tied to the holiday. It is recited as a way to pay tribute to our fallen military men and women.
In 1971, Decoration Day (now known as Memorial Day) became a federal holiday to be acknowledged on the last Monday of May. We now consider Memorial Day weekend to be the unofficial start of the summer, and we have included barbeques and parades to the days festivities.
Memorial Day and the Armed Forces
Memorial Day is not only a time to remember the soldiers of the Civil War, but all the Armed Forces who have paid the ultimate price to protect our way of life.
Countless men and women have faced down tyranny, terrorism, and evil to bring us Democracy and Liberty.
The Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard have been the defence of our country through all conflicts and struggles. Each man and woman is honored on Memorial Day for their valiant fearlessness.
All the benefits and luxuries we have are due to these brave souls! Memorial Day is an opportunity to show every fallen soldier that we remember and honor them. From the time of the Civil War to our present struggle, we depend on our armed forces to protect us and our freedom.
